The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at East Surrey Hospital approached the hospital charity earlier this year with an initiative to support grieving families through the creation of memory boxes for families of relatives in ICU.

Supporting families

Losing a loved one in the ICU can be an unexpected and deeply traumatic experience. The memory boxes are designed to help families maintain a connection with their loved ones through cherished keepsakes, shared memories, and thoughtful items. The boxes will contain inkless handprint kits, materials for locks of hair, forget-me-not seeds, books and soft toys specifically chosen to support grieving children and adults alike.

In addition to providing comfort, these memory boxes will be part of a toolkit for ICU nursing staff, helping them offer compassionate care to families in their most difficult moments.

Generous donations exceed target

The project’s fundraising target of £1,500 has been exceeded thanks to the incredible support from individuals and organisations. We are especially grateful to Charlotte, a former ICU patient, who raised an incredible £698 toward the project through her personal fundraising efforts. Her generosity helped make this initiative a reality.

We would also like to express our thanks and appreciation to London Gatwick who also played a crucial role by donating £885, which brought the project to its final goal. Their support has been vital in allowing us to offer these special resources to families at such a critical time.

The importance of the memory boxes

The memory boxes are an essential part of providing families with a sense of closure and a way to preserve the precious memories of their loved ones. For many, these keepsakes serve as a reminder of shared experiences and offer comfort during an incredibly challenging time. The initiative also acknowledges the importance of supporting children who are processing grief, offering them tools to help them understand and express their emotions.

A heartfelt thank you

The ICU team and East Surrey Hospital Charity extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to this project. The generosity of Charlotte, London Gatwick, and all other donors has made it possible to offer these essential resources to families in need.

Together, you have made a difference. Thank you for your kindness and support.
