Thanks to generous donations through our general fund at East Surrey Hospital Charity, we’ve been able to bring the magic of books directly to young patients with a brand-new roaming library service. With £684 raised, we’ve funded two new book trolleys, allowing the Library and Knowledge Team to visit the children’s ward, offering books, storytelling, and a moment of joy for children staying in the hospital.

Being in the hospital can be tough, especially for children. But a good story can provide more than just entertainment—it can bring comfort, spark imagination, and even help children process their experiences. This service not only promotes reading for pleasure but also supports learning, relaxation, and wellbeing.

Since launching a few months ago, the roaming library has already made a big impact. On World Book Day, the team brought books and stories to the wards, and the response was heartwarming. One staff member even asked, "Can you come every day?".

The donation of book trolleys enabled us [Library team] to visit the children and neonate wards and the children’s ED with donated books to give away. As well as educational benefits the evidence shows that reading to children also supports wellbeing. Looking at books and reading aloud can help pass the time and also provide an escape and a sense of normality during what can be an unsettling experience.
